Forget Me Not:
Help Homeless Kids Blossom – Kids' Day on Capitol Hill
In 2000 and 2001, The National Center coordinated Forget Me Not, a unique educational event designed to increase awareness about homelessness among schools and communities, and promote student involvement in community service and civic activities.
Centered on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, Forget Me Not allowed homeless children to share their experiences directly with national lawmakers and students around the country. During the event, a panel of children spoke with lawmakers about being homeless and about helping homeless people. In turn, legislators shared their views on how to address homelessness, and answered questions from the audience of more than 200 children and from participating schools in at least 36 states.
To implement Forget Me Not, The National Center collaborated with Mass Interaction, National Coalition for the Homeless, and a network of national, state, and local education, advocacy, and service organizations.
