START With Kids
The National Center on Family Homelessness has been selected to participate the Safe Start Initiative, a federal effort to prevent and reduce the impact of violence on children and their families. START with Kids (Shelter-based, Trauma-informed Assessment, Referral, and Treatment) is a comprehensive intervention to support children in homeless shelters in Worcester, MA. The START with Kids intervention includes: 1) comprehensive child assessments to identify needs; 2) child-specific service plans to address needs; and 3) Strengthening Family Coping Resources, a family group that helps to build safety, connection, and ritual. The National Center works in partnership with the Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance and University of Maryland's Family-Informed Trauma Treatment Center to pilot START with Kids. The Safe Start Initiative is funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice.
