START With Kids
The National Center on Family Homelessness is participating in the Safe Start Initiative, a federal effort to prevent and reduce the impact of violence on children and their families, funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) at the U.S. Department of Justice. We are piloting the "START with Kids" (Shelter-based, Trauma-Informed Assessment, Referral, and Treatment) intervention to support children in homeless shelters in Worcester, MA. The intervention includes: 1) comprehensive child assessments to identify needs; 2) child-specific service plans to address needs; and 3) Strengthening Family Coping Resources, a family group that helps to build safety, connection, and ritual. Our partners are the Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance and University of Maryland's Family-Informed Trauma Treatment Center.
