Public Education & Policy
The National Center on Family Homelessness informs policies at local and national levels to achieve lasting impact. We conduct rigorous studies and write reports that document the causes, correlates, and consequences of homelessness. This information provides local and national leaders with accurate information to help create effective policy. The National Center develops and evaluates our own programs and those of others to identify solutions that work to prevent and end family homelessness. Using this knowledge, we tell the story of family homelessness to policymakers and the public.
True to our mission, we launched the Campaign To End Child Homelessness with the release of America's Youngest Outcasts in 2009. The report updated our landmark 1999 study of homeless families and created a Report Card for all 50 states.
Among the shocking findings in our report: one in every 50 children in America experiences homelessness annually - more than 1.5 million children. By combining and analyzing over 70 variables, America's Youngest Outcasts offers a detailed snapshot of the status of homeless children nationally and in each state.
With the current recession and mounting home foreclosures as a backdrop, interest in America's Youngest Outcasts is high. More than 3,000 media stories have brought the report's findings to every corner of the nation. For the first time, the plight of America's homeless children has been exposed for all to see. The report generated interested from the White House and Congress in addressing this once invisible issue.
In addition, we have partnered with the Center for Social Innovation to disseminate information through the Homelessness Resource Center. The Center has developed an interactive online website for providers, consumers, policymakers, researchers, and public agencies at federal, state, and local levels who share knowledge, solutions, and promising practices.
