How PEACH was Developed

In 2004, The National Center on Family Homelessness created the PEACH Initiative to respond to the health needs of young children experiencing homelessness. Through this Initiative, we have been training service providers around the country to help children learn about physical and emotional health. PEACH is based on the award-winning OrganWise Guys® curriculum, which we adapted to fit the unique circumstances of young children experiencing homelessness.

The OrganWise Guys® are fanciful characters representing organs in the body. Hardy Heart® teaches children how their hearts need love, kindness, and plenty of exercise to stay healthy. Calci M. Bone® is also enthusiastic about exercise, almost as much as she is about eating bone-healthy foods such as yogurt, milk, and cheese. Windy the Lungs® loves fresh air and fresh fruits and vegetables, while Madame Muscle® inspires children to stay active to build strong muscles. These characters and the other OrganWise Guys® inspire children to eat healthy foods, exercise regularly, and strive for emotional wellbeing. Interactive and engaging materials – books, videos, activities, and more – help bring the OrganWise Guys® messages to life.

Since 2004, The National Center has partnered with OrganWise Guys, Inc. to bring PEACH to hundreds of shelters around the country.
